Planning

There were two main decisions to be made, What to see and How to get there.  After discussing numerous cities, it became reasonably obvious a car would provide the most flexibility and allow us to see some of the less frequented cities.  This is especially the case for Germany and Belgium, as we couldn't find trains that got us close to Ypres and, to a lesser extent, Rothenburg, Neuschwanstein Castle etc.  I also liked the idea of driving over the Alps - a la Top Gear and the Stelvio Pass

A car presented it's own problems, especially in Italy.  Many people on TripAdvisor thought we were mad to even consider a car - perhaps they will yet be proven correct.  However others, such as Terry from Auckland, have travelled by car and agree with us that the journey is as much a part of the holiday as the destination.  Certainly I expect Tracy to suggest we stop for photo opportunities often, something you can't do on a train.

So where are we going?  Here is the plan as at 29 April 2014, showing arrival and departure dates and distances between towns.  We have booked some hotels/apartments/B&B's in Italy but mostly plan to book a few days ahead via the internet or just book something when we arrive.  Hopefully we can then be a bit flexible and stay an extra night if we feel the need or go to other places recommended by fellow travellers.

In a nutshell we fly to Paris and spend 5 days there before picking up a Peugeot lease car (308 diesel manual with GPS) and driving approximately 9000 kms through 8 countries.

End of Tour

Monday 17th June Today was a reserve day, in case there was a big group and some needed to do their Gorilla Experience today. We were not looking forward to another wasted day at the resort and fortunately Nomad had an optional tour to Rwanda. We were a little concerned as it did mean two border crossings, but it seemed like a good idea. Arriving at the border crossing into Rwanda we were told that Aussies didn't need a visa, saving $50USD, so that was awesome and a nice little win for us. Rwanda is quite different to Uganda in that the roads are super smooth, there is very good street lighting and the speed limit is 60 for almost all of the country - and there are many speed cameras. There are pushbikes absolutely everwhere, even on the country roads far from the city. Motorbike riders all wear helmets and there were never more than 2 to a bike.   Saturday 8th June We had a very early morning today as we had a hot air balloon flight booked.  Driving to the take off point it was pitch black, certainly no street lights around here,  There were 6 others on the flight, including our driver and a friend of his.  Sounds like he gets to go up fairly regularly, but it was her first time.  The flight was very serene but there was some cloud cover so it was cold as we went high up.  Twice we broke through the cloud layer and the second time we got spectacular views of Mt Kilimanjaro.  We first saw this from the ground yesterday and it is beautiful, rising majestically above the plains to a height of 5,895metres  (thanks JoP ;) ) As well as the mountain we saw elephants, zebra, wilderbeest and giraffe.  We weren't low enough to get decent photos, but I could get a pretty good look with my binoculars.  The landing was a bit rougher than ones we experienced last year in Turkey as there was a bit of a breeze.  We didn't tip over t

 We flew out of Melbourne at 9:15pm Friday 24th May with an initial 14 hour flight to Dubai.  As usual I didn't sleep very well or very long on the plane but after a 3 hour lay over and another 3 hour flight we arrived in Cairo. Upon check-in at the Holiday Inn we found we had been upgraded to a Nile River view room (from a city view) and can also see the pyramids from our balcony.  Though a little hazy it was awesome seeing them for the first time. A quick unpack and then we went to the National Egyptian Museum of Civilization.  Although we go there with our tour in a few days time, apparently they only take you to the Hall of Mummies.  We were keen to see what else was there, but in particular Tutankhamun's mask.  Unfortunately you weren't allowed to take photos of the mask, but it was as spectacular as we hoped.  We spent a little over 2 hours there and saw many  sarcophagii and many other masks and trinkets.  Strangely we couldn't find the Hall of mummies, so it wil
