On the Road Again..

Leaving Florence we had a 500km drive ahead so decided to use toll ways.  Without them a 6 hour drive became at least 9 - and we had some stops planned.

The first stop was at San Gimignano in the Tuscany region, which we walked around for about an hour.  It is another mediaeval walled city and we found the baths where people used to go along with churches and the well.  We were lucky that we were there early (9:30) before most of the crowds arrived so Trace could get photos without people in them.

From here we drove to Siena, but the traffic was so bad we decided to continue without having a good look around.  So 5 hours, 400kms  and 25 Euros in tolls later we arrived in Positano.  Italian drivers are a different breed and the drive through Naples in particular had been a little hairy.  There was actually a sign saying that we should give way to overtaking traffic.  So in other words if somebody is on the wrong side of the road, you should slow down for them!  Bizarre.

Positano is where Tracy wanted to spend her 50th and one of the main reasons for the trip.  We spent a lot more on the hotel here to get 'the view' - but it worked.

Positano is a gorgeous town on the Amalfi Coast and we spent the first evening and most of the next day just walking around.  It is also VERY hilly and we are very good friends with the 70 steps from the road up to our hotel.  The rest of the day we took a boat cruise along the coast towards Amalfi, passing a few other beautiful towns , including one that is accessible only by boat - ever since the stairs down to Sante Croce collapsed 4 years ago.  It was lovely seeing these towns from the water and I had a swim in the crystal blue ocean - though it was a little cold.  It had been a really warm day, so I did enjoy the swim.

Dinner was at a very nice restaurant with ocean views and we walked off our meal climbing back up to the hotel.
